Spring Lawn Care

Spring Lawn Care and Garden Planting: Make the Most of Your New Garden

There’s something deeply satisfying about stepping into a freshly laid garden at the start of spring. The air is crisper, the light a little warmer, and everything feels just that bit more possible. At Fairfield Meadows in Bedfordshire and Alconbury Weald in Cambridgeshire, many of our beautifully crafted new homes are ready for immediate occupation, and each one comes with a freshly turfed garden, waiting for you to make it your own.

Whether you’re a seasoned green thumb or just beginning to enjoy the pleasures of outdoor living, now is the perfect time to give your new lawn the attention it deserves and start planning those all-important spring plantings. A well-tended garden is an extension of your home, your lifestyle and your wellbeing.

The gardens that come with our properties for sale in Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire are newly turfed as standard. This means you get an instantly lush, green canvas, and to keep it thriving through the season and beyond, a little early care goes a long way.

1. Keep Off for a While
When you first move in, it’s tempting to start enjoying the garden straight away. But freshly laid turf needs time to establish. Ideally, you should give it two to three weeks before walking on it extensively. This allows the roots to knit firmly into the soil beneath.

2. Watering Wisely
Spring weather can be unpredictable, with a mix of showers and dry spells. During the first few weeks, especially if it’s dry, your lawn will benefit from a thorough watering once or twice a week. Early morning or late evening is best to avoid evaporation.

3. First Cut
Once the grass is about 5–7cm high and you can no longer lift it from the ground, it’s ready for its first cut. Keep your mower blade high and just a light trim to encourage growth. Gradually lower the blade over subsequent cuts, and never remove more than a third of the grass height in one go.

4. Feed and Weed
A spring lawn feed will help your new turf establish itself with a strong, healthy root system. Opt for a granular fertiliser and apply it when rain is forecast, or water it in yourself. Avoid weed treatments during the first season unless necessary, as young lawns are still finding their balance.

Once your lawn is looking lush and healthy, your attention naturally turns to planting. And spring is bursting with opportunities. The beauty of a newly turfed garden is that you have a clean slate. Whether you want low-maintenance structure or a riot of colour, spring is the time to get your hands in the soil.

1. Start with Structure
Use evergreen shrubs to create structure around the edges. Box, photinia, pittosporum or yew give year-round form and create a backdrop against which you can plant seasonally. Choose different shapes and heights for variety and consider mixing in a few taller grasses for movement.

2. Bring in Colour
Spring flowers like tulips, daffodils and hyacinths will already be available pre-potted if you haven’t pre-planted bulbs in the autumn. Pansies, violas, and primroses are hardy favourites and add instant cheer. For later in the season, plant hardy perennials like delphiniums, geraniums and salvia now so they can establish in time for summer.

3. Plant for Pollinators
Lavender, foxgloves, alliums and wallflowers are all bee-friendly and create a lovely natural vibe. Scatter some wildflower seeds along borders for a low-effort, high-impact burst of colour that’s also brilliant for biodiversity.

4. Create Your Outdoor Sanctuary
Consider adding a small herb bed near the kitchen door, including rosemary, thyme and mint, all hardy, fragrant and useful. For those with a little more space, raised beds make growing salads and vegetables easy and satisfying. A well-placed bench, a birdbath or a couple of containers bursting with seasonal flowers can transform your garden into your favourite ‘room’ of the house.

At Alconbury Weald and Fairfield Meadows, we’ve taken great care to ensure that our properties for sale in Cambridgeshire and properties for sale in Bedfordshire look beautiful on the inside and extend that same quality and attention to detail outdoors too.
