Last-Minute Mother’s Day Ideas: A Few of Our Favourites
If, like us, you’ve been caught out by how quickly Mother’s Day has crept up, don’t worry, there’s still time to organise something thoughtful, personal and local. We’ve pulled together a few of our go-to favourites that always go down well. Whether you’re looking for a gift, an experience or just a simple way to mark the day with a bit of flair, these are all great options across Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire.
Let’s start with flowers. You can’t go wrong. We love the quality and style of The Flower Mill in Sawtry. They’ve got a beautifully curated Mother’s Day range starting from around £45, and they always use seasonal blooms. If you’re local to Alconbury Weald (it’s about half an hour drive), you can collect or arrange local delivery. They also make their bouquets feel very personal, and always wrapped just right.
If you fancy getting out and making a day of it, a Mother’s Day market is a lovely choice. Experience Bedfordshire lists some great options, with stalls full of locally made crafts, food, and homeware. We always find something unique when we go, and it’s a chance to pick up a last-minute card or treat without it feeling rushed. Biggleswade and Ampthill usually have good ones. Just check local listings for details.
When we’re looking for something different, the Mother’s Day 2025 Collection (look under ‘Mother’s Day Gifts’) has some lovely options. Their handmade bird boxes are a hit if your mum is a garden lover. We’ve also found keepsake jewellery and botanical candles here in the past and most items come beautifully packaged and can be ordered for quick delivery.
For the tea-loving mums, we always enjoy popping into Whittard of Chelsea in Cambridge. The Covent Garden blend and English Rose are two of our personal favourites — floral and fragrant, without being overpowering. They do really lovely tins and gift boxes, and the shop team are brilliant at helping you choose. Great if you’re pairing it with lunch or a punt in the city.
Speaking of punting, one of the most peaceful and picturesque experiences you can book is a punting tour with Rutherfords Punting. We’ve done this ourselves, and it’s such a relaxing way to see the city from the water. You can book a shared tour or go private. It makes a great pairing with a cafe stop or afternoon tea nearby.
One of our most trusted pub recommendations is The Plough at Fen Ditton, a proper Mother’s Day spot with a riverside setting and great seasonal menus. It’s not too formal, and the food is always consistently good. If you’re heading there after a walk or a punt, even better. Just be sure to ring ahead for a table.
For something ready to give, Fitzbillies Hampers is a brilliant option. We’ve gifted their hampers before and the chutneys and biscuits are always well received. They’ve got options for sweet, savoury and mixed, and lots of items are sourced from around Cambridgeshire. It’s thoughtful without being too complicated.
Or if you’d rather keep things outdoors and simple, we recommend Wrest Park or Shuttleworth. Wrest Park has beautiful gardens to stroll through, and Shuttleworth sometimes has seasonal activities going on. Both are within easy reach of Fairfield Meadows and make for a relaxed afternoon if the weather is on side. Bring a thermos and a few homemade biscuits if you’re not booking lunch.
We’re lucky to be surrounded by so many fantastic independent shops, countryside spots and food producers in Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire. Whether you’re keeping things simple or going all out this year, there’s no shortage of thoughtful, last-minute options for celebrating Mother’s Day.
