Is Huntingdon a nice place to live

Is Huntingdon a Nice Place to Live?

Huntingdon is an historic market town in Cambridgeshire, quietly situated on the banks of the River Great Ouse. It’s a town with long-standing character, a practical location for travel in all directions, and a gentle pace of life that increasingly appeals to families, professionals and those seeking more space while staying well connected.

We find ourselves visiting Huntingdon often, not only because it’s close to our homes for sale at Alconbury Weald, but because it’s a location that continues to grow with grace. While it’s easy to be drawn in by the Georgian facades and historic centre, the town offers much more than picturesque streets.

Huntingdon works well for modern life. The high street has what you need for daily errands, independent coffee shops and bakeries, a local butcher, health stores, opticians and pharmacies, as well as national brands and supermarkets. It has a compact layout, so you can easily run errands or pick up ingredients for dinner without feeling rushed.

Every Wednesday and Saturday, the market comes to life with local produce, flowers and fresh fish. A traditional market town atmosphere is still present here, and it’s something you sense more and more as you spend time getting to know the streets.

Just across the river is Godmanchester, a walkable stretch with riverside views, well-tended parks and a small-town feel that complements Huntingdon. A short drive brings you to Hinchingbrooke Country Park, offering lakes, woodland and open space across more than 170 acres that are ideal for morning walks or weekend picnics.

Huntingdon Railway Station provides direct services to London King’s Cross, with journeys typically taking around an hour. The station is also on the Thameslink line, offering access south through St Pancras and Blackfriars, and northwards towards Peterborough and beyond.

For those driving, the A14 and A1 offer quick connections to Cambridge, Bedford, and the wider motorway network. We find that this accessibility is a major plus for anyone working across the region or seeking balance between a calm home environment and easy access to work or leisure.

There are several primary and secondary schools within the town and nearby villages. Many families choose Huntingdon for its variety of educational options, including both state and independent schools within easy reach. Hinchingbrooke School, one of the local secondaries, has a good reputation, and there are nurseries and childcare facilities available to support younger families. For further education, Cambridge’s world-class universities and colleges are under 30 miles away. This proximity to such an academic hub gives Huntingdon an educational advantage not often found in more rural settings.

Huntingdon’s community feel is something that becomes more apparent the longer you spend time here. Local groups, societies and sports clubs give newcomers an easy route into community life. The Commemoration Hall, a historic venue in the centre of town, hosts theatre, cinema and art events; a cultural resource that brings creative vibrancy to the area. There’s also a growing café culture, with new businesses bringing good coffee and artisan bakes to the high street. Nearby, Portholme Meadow, the largest surviving water meadow in England, is a wide, open stretch of common land. It’s the kind of place that invites dog walks, kite flying and an appreciation for wide skies.

On weekends, residents enjoy the blend of town and country. From walking at Grafham Water to canoeing along the Great Ouse or brunch at the Waterside Café, the pace here is balanced and authentic.

Many of the people who move to Huntingdon do so for more than one reason. For some it’s the transport links; for others it’s the chance to live near countryside while still enjoying town conveniences. For families, the quality of local schools and the ease of accessing green space are deciding factors. And increasingly, it’s the lifestyle, the markets, riverside walks, and the rhythm of a well-established community.
