This article marks the beginning of our travel and lifestyle guide series, showcasing the finest offerings in the local towns of Huntingdon, Godmanchester, Stotfold, Alconbury Weald, and the city of Cambridge.
In the heart of Cambridgeshire, Huntingdon presents a captivating blend of historic sites, tranquil natural parks, and outstanding dining experiences. We were enchanted by its rich history, breathtaking landscapes, and delectable cuisine. Here’s our guide to some of the local highlights we recently visited and thoroughly enjoyed.
Historic Sites
The Manor at Hemingford Grey
Stepping into The Manor at Hemingford Grey felt like traveling back in time. This beautiful Tudor country house, built around a 13th-century nunnery, is one of England’s oldest continuously inhabited houses. During the summer, guided tours reveal its fascinating history and the enchanting gardens. The blend of medieval architecture and Tudor charm makes it a must-visit for history enthusiasts.
Nature & Parks
Houghton Mill
One of the most picturesque locations we visited was Houghton Mill. This 17th-century watermill on the River Great Ouse offers more than just historical intrigue. The surrounding area is perfect for leisurely walks, and you can even enjoy canoeing on the river. Its characterful tearoom served some delightful homemade cakes, providing a perfect spot to relax and soak in the tranquil atmosphere.
Hinchingbrooke Country Park
With 170 acres of grasslands, meadows, woodlands, and lakes, Hinchingbrooke Country Park is a nature lover’s paradise. Exploring the park, we found it to be an idyllic location. Its special foraging events are a unique attraction, offering visitors a chance to learn about and gather wild, edible plants. This park truly encapsulates the beauty of the English countryside.
Somersham Pocket Park
A true, hidden gem, Somersham Pocket Park, is perfect for those seeking peace and quiet. The lake, wildflower meadow, and bird hide create a serene environment that’s perfect for a contemplative walk. We feel it’s a wonderful place to escape the hustle and bustle and connect with nature.
Arts & Culture
Hinchingbrooke House Performing Arts Centre
Set in the grounds of the stately Hinchingbrooke House, this performing arts centre is a cultural hub. During our visit, we were fortunate to attend a concert that was nothing short of spectacular. The venue hosts an array of events, including musicals and dance performances, making it a vibrant part of the local arts scene.
Food & Drink
The Mermaid at Ellington
Dining at The Mermaid in Ellington was a culinary highlight. This luxury 14th-century restaurant, run by a Michelin-trained chef, offers a vibrant, Asian-inspired menu that remains true to British roots. With many vegan options and a setting that’s both historic and elegant, we’d recommend it as a top pick for discerning diners.
The Old Bridge Hotel Restaurant
The Old Bridge Hotel Restaurant, housed in this ivy-clad 18th-century townhouse, offers an elegant yet relaxed fine dining experience. The seasonally changing menus focus on simple, high-quality flavours, served in a beautiful dining room with views of the patio garden. Their acclaimed wine shop is a haven for oenophiles.
The Cock at Hemingford Grey
Located in the picturesque village of Hemingford Grey, The Cock was voted National Pub of the Year in 2019 by the Good Pub Guide and we can fully understand why. Its riverside setting, modern British cuisine, and real ales make it a perfect spot for a delightful meal. The charming surroundings and top-notch service were well worth the short drive from Huntingdon.
The George Hotel
In the heart of Huntingdon town centre, The George Hotel has been newly refurbished and now houses a fine dining restaurant with colonial-inspired decor. Bobbie’s Bar is perfect for cocktails, and the botanical Orangery offers a delightful setting for afternoon tea. The historic building and stylish interiors make for a memorable dining experience.
All in all, we found Huntingdon to be a treasure trove of history, natural beauty, and culinary excellence. Each location we visited offered something unique and memorable, making it clear why this region is a beloved destination. Whether you’re exploring ancient manors, enjoying the tranquillity of nature parks, or indulging in fine dining, Huntingdon has something special for us all.
