Best Homes and Gardens in Cambridgeshire

Best Homes and Gardens to Visit in Cambridgeshire

Cambridgeshire is a county rich with heritage, beautiful gardens, and inspiring architecture. Whether you live nearby or are planning a visit, there are numerous opportunities to explore the best homes and gardens in the area. Here we share our recommendations for some wonderful properties that capture the essence of the county’s historic charm, natural beauty and exceptional horticulture. Each of these places offers something special, from grand estates to intimate gardens, making them well worth a visit.

A true highlight on any garden-lover’s itinerary, Anglesey Abbey is set in 114 acres of gardens, parkland and woodland. Managed by the National Trust, it’s just outside Cambridge, and a visit here feels like stepping into a peaceful sanctuary. The grounds are famous for their diversity of seasonal displays. In spring and summer, the formal gardens come alive with spectacular floral displays, featuring tulips, dahlias and roses.

The house itself, originally a medieval priory, was transformed into a luxurious country home in the early 20th century. Inside, you can explore carefully curated collections of fine furniture, artworks and books. The Winter Walk, vibrant with colour even in colder months, and the Rose Garden in early summer, make Anglesey Abbey one of our favourite spots to visit again and again.

Wimpole Estate offers an impressive Georgian mansion surrounded by extensive gardens and landscaped parkland. It’s Cambridgeshire’s largest house and estate, making it an ideal place to visit whether you’re interested in history, gardening or simply enjoying a leisurely walk. You can easily spend a full day here, wandering through the beautifully restored walled garden, the wildflower meadow, or exploring the working farm.

We particularly enjoy strolling the extensive parklands designed by landscape architect Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. With sweeping views, lakes and historic trees, this carefully designed landscape offers both tranquility and visual interest. Inside the house, you’ll find grand interiors and fascinating displays, offering insight into life over the centuries at Wimpole.

Located in the charming Georgian town of Wisbech, Peckover House offers a fascinating glimpse into a gracious lifestyle from times gone by. Managed by the National Trust, this elegant townhouse dates back to the early 18th century and is renowned for its delightful gardens.

When we visit Peckover House, we’re always impressed by the intimacy and variety of its gardens. Walled and sheltered, they offer a peaceful retreat and are filled with an impressive collection of rare plants, carefully maintained borders, and decorative planting schemes. The orangery, with its exotic plants, and the historic kitchen garden, make this a special place to spend a relaxed afternoon.

Elton Hall, near Peterborough, is one of Cambridgeshire’s hidden gems. The house is a splendid example of Gothic Revival architecture and houses an impressive collection of paintings, books and antiques. It has been home to the Proby family since the 17th century and remains a private residence today. We find the gardens here truly captivating. Set over landscaped terraces and pathways, the planting schemes are both colourful and thoughtfully designed. The rose garden and topiary lawns are particularly striking in summer, and the parkland views offer tranquillity. Elton Hall often hosts events such as garden tours and seasonal exhibitions, providing further reason to return again and again.

The Botanic Garden in central Cambridge offers something a little different. While not attached to a historic house, its 40 acres contain over 8,000 plant species. It’s a haven of biodiversity and horticultural expertise and a fascinating place to visit throughout the year. We especially enjoy exploring the various glasshouses, each showcasing different climate zones, including tropical and desert environments. The Winter Garden and rock garden provide interest at different times of the year, while carefully curated herbaceous borders and woodland areas offer ever-changing displays of colour and texture. A visit here is both educational and calming, and it makes an ideal starting or finishing point for any day spent in Cambridge.

With so many beautiful homes and gardens on your doorstep, Cambridgeshire offers an exceptional quality of life.
